Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the trash from one of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
